from the Lane County Charter Review Committee and staff reports

The Lane County Charter Review Committee will meet Friday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and Monday, July 29 from 10 a.m. to noon to consider redistricting proposals submitted by Stanton Long of the Harrang Long law firm.

A version of the proposal was first submitted to the county in April 2020, but was not shared with the Charter Review Committee.

Advocates say the proposal is based on the Oregon statewide initiative IP-14 from the group “People Not Politicians.” The committee is expected to closely compare the Harrang Long proposal with IP-14.

The hybrid public meetings, conducted online and in person in the commissioners’ conference room in the Public Service Building, 125 E. 8th Ave., will also allow open public discussion of a legal review on behalf of Lane County.

Lane County commissioners face an Aug. 6 deadline for deciding whether to place charter amendments on the Nov. 5 presidential election ballot.

Commissioners have already approved three charter amendments for the ballot. Voters will be asked whether to repeal charter sections 32: Spending Limitation; 33: East Alton Baker Park; and 34: Income Tax Cap.

Public comment is welcomed at the beginning of each Charter Review Committee meeting. Written public comments for the Friday meeting will also be accepted by email to jenna.cusimano@lanecountyor.gov until noon Thursday, July 25.

The charter is often referred to as the “county’s constitution.” For more information, see the website www.lanecountyor.gov/CharterReviewCommittee.

UPDATE (July 25, 2024): Link to the Miller Nash legal review, clarify that the review is on behalf of Lane County counsel.
