Presenter: Four punk bands will perform in a free concert coming up Saturday, June 14 at the Growers Market. It’s to celebrate the new KEPW program Transcendence with Farron Janknot. From the punk band Rogue and the Chemical Restraints, Rogue says there will also be several vendors.
Rogue: There’s five, six vendors coming, it’s going to be a pretty diverse group. We are having a couple of artists come in; Punk Prince Designs does upcycled artwork and jewelry and chain mail, from, like, recycled bicycle pieces and fallen power lines. I’m going to be doing tarot readings there.
[00:00:36] There’s going to be art, there’s going to be jewelry, there’s going to be tarot—it’s just going to be a punk extravaganza.
[00:00:44] Presenter: We asked Rogue to share how the band came together.
[00:00:47] Rogue: I went to Lane County Behavioral Health one day and they had a punk rock group. And I thought, ‘Well, why not?’ It can’t be much different than karaoke.
‘Cause karaoke used to be how I kind of got my musical angst out. You know what I mean? I wasn’t doing open mics or anything like that, but I needed an outlet and I just clicked with these guys and they’re all phenomenal musicians, so it worked out really well.
[00:01:16] We were practicing as just an outlet for so long, and then we were like, you know, ‘We need to go on stage. We’re there, we’re ready. And that seems like the next logical step.’
And so we went on a stage for the first time at Lane County Behavioral Health and put on a show in the county Behavioral Health Unit; it was an open show and we had 57 people there.
[00:01:39] Our other lead singer, Cheyenne, had a seizure in the middle of the show, so we put on quite the show for everybody as I dove out of my chair and caught her before she hit the ground. And then, you know, administered her medication and she got better. And we got up and I turned around. I said, ‘Well, we said we’d put on a show, didn’t we?’
[00:02:02] Cheyenne’s had to quit recently ’cause of some surgery she had but shout-out to Cheyenne. You’re a part of our band still. You’re in our hearts. We love you.
[00:02:09] Shout-out to Elijah. He’s our lead guitarist. He’s trained himself and I personally think he reminds me of Jimi Hendrix. I mean, he’s a phenomenal, phenomenal guitarist. We have Steve on the drums. We have Michael on the guitar, and Zach on the bass.
[00:02:24] And they’re all just so talented. I can come to them with lyrics—because I write our lyrics—and they’ll be like, ‘Oh yeah, here, here’s a tune to go with that.’ And within a couple of minutes, we’re playing a new song.
[00:02:39] I’ve always written poetry and my poems like easily just kind of turned into songs. They adapted into it. I’ve always loved to sing. It’s always been cathartic for me. And I get into this flow state where it just kind of pours out of me.
[00:02:58] And that’s just a beautiful feeling when you can get in that flow state in anything. Whatever your passion is, I encourage you, if you get into a flow state in something, that’s your calling.
[00:03:09] Presenter: Rogue and the Chemical Restraints will be part of a free punk extravaganza 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 14 at Growers Market, produced by KEPW 97.3, Eugene’s PeaceWorks community radio.
