Speed limits lowered to 25 mph on Hilyard, 40th

Speed limits on Hilyard Street and 40th Avenue are being reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph, starting April 15.

Speeds on Hilyard will be reduced between Broadway Street and 40th Avenue; 40th Avenue will change between Hilyard and Willamette.

The effort is a partnership to enhance safety on key roads between the city of Eugene, Oregon Department of Transportation and the Eugene Police Department. City crews will be systematically replacing speed limit signs.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to prioritizing the safety of all road users,” said Logan Telles, transportation planner for the city of Eugene. “By reducing the speed limit on Hilyard and 40th, we are taking tangible steps to reduce the risk of severe and fatal crashes and create safer streets for everyone.” 

Studies consistently show that lower speeds significantly increase the likelihood of survival in the event of a crash.
