Scorching summer creates demand for public water, sanitation facilities

Increased access to sanitation facilities and clean water will contribute to a healthier community for all residents.

by Trevor Eubanks, First Christian Church

For many years, the First Christian Church has served as a central hub and ground zero for community partner needs and services in Eugene for the unhoused, underserved, and recovery community. We witness firsthand the daily struggles faced by our most vulnerable residents, especially during the scorching summer months.

As the facility coordinator at FCC, I have been advocating for and assisting those experiencing homelessness, low-income families, and individuals struggling as an ancillary niche need of our organization. A critical part of this work involves ensuring access to basic necessities, and unfortunately, this access is limited in our community.

The Challenge:

Eugene’s growing population, combined with the scorching summer temperatures, creates a strain on existing public facilities. This lack of resources disproportionately impacts our most vulnerable residents, including those experiencing homelessness and low-income individuals.

Proposed Solutions:

  • Portable Toilets: A significant increase in the number of strategically placed portable toilets throughout the city is crucial. This will help maintain public sanitation and reduce the spread of disease.
  • Handwashing Stations: Installing handwashing stations alongside portable toilets will promote hygiene and public health.
  • Water Fountains: Ensuring easy access to clean drinking water is essential for everyone during the hot summer months. Consider installing additional water fountains in high-traffic areas, parks, and near existing portable toilets.
  • Water Filling Stations: Providing water bottle filling stations will encourage hydration and reduce reliance on single-use plastic bottles.

Benefits:

  • Improved Public Health: Increased access to sanitation facilities and clean water will contribute to a healthier community for all residents.
  • Reduced Strain on Emergency Services: By addressing basic needs, we can lessen the burden on emergency services responding to heat-related illnesses.
  • Compassion for Vulnerable Residents: Providing these amenities demonstrates care and support for those who rely on public resources.

Call to Action:

I urge the Eugene City Council to prioritize this critical issue and allocate resources for the immediate installation of additional portable toilets, handwashing stations, water fountains, and water filling stations throughout Eugene.
