Staff from the City of Eugene and LTD will present technical recommendations this month on the MovingAhead project.

by Andrew Martin, LTD Development Planner

MovingAhead is a partnership between the City of Eugene and Lane Transit District (LTD) to redesign and invest in five major corridors in Eugene to make them better for walking, biking and taking the bus. As part of this project, the LTD and the City of Eugene are considering the street designs and levels of investment for the five corridors: River Road, Highway 99, Coburg Road, 30th Avenue, and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

After being paused for most of 2020 due to the pandemic, the MovingAhead project is active again, we have released a staff recommendation, and some key dates are happening next week.

Staff at the City of Eugene and Lane Transit District have released a technical recommendation for each of the five MovingAhead corridors. This recommendation is based on comments we’ve heard over the course of the project and the results of the Alternatives Analysis. We believe this recommendation best meets the project’s goals and objectives (outlined in the Alternatives Analysis) and responds to the many hundreds of comments we have received since the project started in 2015.

We encourage you to check out this interactive StoryMap that we put together to help communicate some of the reasoning behind the recommendation. We have also put together a memo that explains how we got to this recommendation.

Staff’s recommendation is:

CorridorMode
Highway 99Enhanced Corridor
River RoadEmX
30th Avenue to Lane Community College (LCC) via downtownNo-Build [reconsider this corridor after other agency studies and projects are completed]
Coburg RoadEnhanced Corridor [requiring additional study and community engagement]
Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard via downtownEnhanced Corridor

MovingAhead’s two advisory committees will be meeting to provide recommendations to Eugene City Council and LTD’s Board of Directors:

  • Dec. 7, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.: LTD’s Strategic Planning Committee
  • Dec. 10, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 pm. MovingAhead Oversight Committee

Both meetings will be held via Zoom. Information on how to join both meetings will be posted on the day of the meeting on LTD’s website at http://www.ltd.org/events-calendar/.

In early 2022, we will take these recommendations to Eugene City Council and the LTD Board for their consideration.
