Councilor Emily Semple: "I'm very excited about this because one of the things I was concerned about when I started on Council was: How do we engage the community? How do we let people know what's going on? And this has gotten more more and more challenging. So I think this is a big step and I'm looking forward to seeing how you all love it. So go check it out."

The city of Eugene is excited to announce its new newsroom webpage.

Councilor Emily Semple (City Council meeting April 8): “The city’s newsroom has gone live. And I invite you to check it out. If you go to our Eugene-OR.gov website and right below the first line of ‘What’s Happening,’ there’s a button you can click on and the page has bright colored pictures and photographs you can follow to get to all kinds of stories. We have: Featured News, Community Safety, Arts and Culture, Parks and Entertainment, Transportation, and Happening Now.

I’m very excited about this because one of the things I was concerned about when I started on Council was: How do we engage the community? How do we let people know what’s going on? And this has gotten more more and more challenging. So I think this is a big step and I’m looking forward to seeing how you all love it. So go check it out.”

This new page allows for increased and deeper information sharing and covers a wide range of city topics that community members ask about. While the city’s home webpage has long held a few recent news items, the newsroom significantly increases the number of topics community members can find in one place.

“We heard from the community and City Council that increased communication about city projects is a priority,” said City Manager Sarah Medary. “There’s a lot of great work happening all over Eugene, and the newsroom helps highlight that work in one place people can easily go to.”

The newsroom webpage also supports the City of Eugene 2023-2026 Strategic Plan, which is informed by the 2022 Community Survey. The strategic plan includes communication and outreach as one of four key focus areas, with goals including: improve community awareness and understanding of priority topics; engage with a broader cross section of the community; and increase community confidence in council and staff.

Visitors to the newsroom webpage will find six main categories:

  • Featured – Learn about opportunities to engage with the city, as well as updates regarding City Council, budget, affordable housing, unhoused services, and more.
  • Community Safety – Find out how your community safety payroll tax dollars are spent, along with other updates from across the community safety system.
  • Arts and Culture – Get a deeper dive into some of the city’s cultural events and projects and learn more about how the city supports the arts in Eugene.
  • Parks and Environment – Learn about planning and engagement opportunities related to Eugene’s Parks and Open Spaces, as well as updates about the city’s Climate Action Plan 2.0 and climate-friendly work.
  • Transportation – Whether it’s by foot, on wheels, or through the sky, find updates about transportation planning, projects around town, parking, and more.
  • Happening Now – The most timely city news that can also be found on our homepage, including program updates, public comment reminders, holiday closures and more.

Newsroom articles will change regularly to reflect current work and project updates with high community interest.
