Due to fire danger, Skinner Butte Park summit parking lot will close to vehicles effective Thursday, Aug. 8.

The parking lot will remain closed through the remainder of the declared fire season, expected to go into early September.

This decision was made by Parks and Open Space in consultation with the Eugene Springfield Fire Department following a series of fires and fireworks incidents originating from the summit parking area.

“The Parks and Open Space team has been highly proactive in their efforts to mitigate potential fire risks, but recent incidents have underscored the necessity of additional measures,” said Deputy Chief Fire Marshal Travis Worthington. “Closing the summit parking area will further support our goal of reducing fire hazards and protecting the community.”

During this time, the summit will still be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.

Numerous trails lead to the summit in addition to the paved road. Just across from RiverPlay Playground, an easy trail winds its way through native habitats to the top of the butte.

Parks and Open Space will continue to monitor the conditions closely and look at reopening based on the recommendations of the Fire Marshal’s Office.
