Eugene Police responded to a shots fired call Saturday at 1:28 p.m. on the bike path near Oak Patch Road.

A man was reported to have shot a gun on the bike path, yelled at others on the path, and ducked into the bushes at one point.  

One officer quickly spotted a man running behind residences along West 14th Avenue who matched the description provided. Officers kept the suspect in sight as he jumped fences and they reported seeing him reaching into his waistband. 

Officers intercepted the suspect, later identified as Maximo Rodolfo Covernali, 37, in a residential backyard in the 2400 block of West 14th Avenue, and he was detained without incident.

A bullet was reported found on the bike path and another in a backyard fence near where two individuals were hanging out.

After an investigation, Covernali was arrested and transported to Lane County Jail on the following charges: Felon in Possession of Firearm; Unlawful Use of Weapon; Disorderly Conduct; Escape in the Third Degree; Reckless Endangering; and Theft in the First Degree of a Firearm.
