EPD deplores Atlanta murders, encourages reporting of hate and bias crimes

Eugene Police Department is flying its flags at half mast after the recent hate and bias murders in Atlanta.
Eugene Police is greatly saddened by the murder of Asian women in Atlanta, Georgia, and the rise of anti-Asian bias incidents around the country and the fear this has created in our community. Eugene Police, in solidarity with our Asian community and the nation, has lowered its flags to half-staff to mourn the loss.
It is unacceptable for us to have anyone in our community live with the anxiety of not knowing if there is a threat in our local area and if they are supported. Firstly, you are supported. We have zero tolerance here for hate crimes and will act on reports received. Secondly, our Special Investigations Unit is aware of and tracking the events in Atlanta, and we are connected with the federal government’s Fusion Center to pinpoint any threats to our area. We have not seen any threat to our Asian community in Eugene at this time and have not had any reports of bias crimes against Asians this year.
We will continue to monitor and respond to any reports we receive and will let our community know if the status changes. If anyone does need to report a bias crime that does not have immediate life and safety or property concerns, we would ask them to please call us at 541.682.5111.
